Blue Christmas is a
very successful annual event that provides food and toys for hundreds of
Irving families that would otherwise have little of either for
Christmas. It is a joint program of the Irving Police, Irving
Firefighters, and various corporate sponsors. |

Each year Irving schools
provide us with lists of families that need assistance during the holidays.
Throughout the holiday season, generous Irving residents bring loads of toys
and non-perishable food items to fire stations and police locations
throughout the city. These items are gathered up in a central location,
sorted by age and gender, and large bags of toys and food items are
assembled based on the size of the family and the age and gender of the
children. Then, the week before Christmas, off-duty police officers and
firefighters and their family members get together and distribute them to
the families in need. |

| It is quite an event. A lot of
very hard work and long hours go into the planning, coordination, and production
of it all, by more than a few very dedicated and compassionate individuals. |
